What We Feed Theodora

Our dogs are our family members, and we work to give them the absolute best life possible. The Le Pawsh lifestyle incorporates a healthy, fresh food diet that will allow them to thrive. As your companion’s holistic salon, we are often asked what we feed our dogs. Theo, our standard poodle, has tried everything from kibble to freeze-dried to gently cooked and raw. Each category has pros and cons, such as nutrition, convenience, and price point. Whichever works for you, make sure you look into the ingredients and processes of the food to make sure it lives up to the standards that you want for your pup. We understand that not everyone is in a position to switch to our recommendations, and that’s entirely okay!.

When we got Theo, we wanted her to be on a raw diet, as we felt, and still do, that it is the healthiest and most biologically appropriate choice. Her breeder had her on a freeze-dried diet, which we stuck with for the first few months before introducing different brands and forms of raw. First, we used Dr. Harvey’s mix, which combines with store-bought raw ingredients, before trying our Candid Roots for a time. Eventually, we landed on We Feed Raw and haven’t looked back since.

Theo’s food consists of:

  • We Feed Raw (protein and vitamin source)

  • The Honest Kitchen - Base Mix (extra nutrients)

  • Fish oil

  • Whatever is in the fridge

Our Food of Choice: We Feed Raw

We Feed Raw is a subscription-style fresh food company that delivers directly to your door. You can start by filling out the profile creator for your dog, and they will then craft a meal plan that suits them based on activity level, age, and more. They offer chicken, beef, venison, lamb, turkey, and duck recipes that can be mixed and matched in your order.

There’s a common misconception that raw food isn’t safe, and some vets may advise against it. However, We Feed Raw products are balanced, designed by a PhD nutritionist, use USDA human-grade ingredients, and prep the food to be consumed raw. Their food goes through HPP (high-pressure pasteurization), which uses water and pressure to sterilize the food, removing harmful bacteria and making it safer than the raw meat you can purchase for your family at a grocery store. When consumed, your dog’s highly acidic stomach will absorb more vitamins and nutrients than a non-fresh diet, allowing them to thrive inside and out.

Base Mix: The Honest Kitchen

Though the product from We Feed Raw is complete and balanced, we still use a mix to add more nutrients, fiber, and water since you have to add water to rehydrate. This mix contains sweet potatoes, peas, cabbage, organic coconut, apples, bananas, spinach, pumpkin, celery, organic honey, organic kelp, and a plethora of vitamins and minerals to bulk up your pup’s bowl. This can be purchased from Pet Food Express or Amazon.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is an excellent way to add extra nutrients to your pup’s bowl. Not only does it increase flavor, but it also promotes healthier skin and coat, joints, heart function, and immune system. Fish oil can be found in pump bottles, dropper bottles, and pill capsules.

Whatever is in the Fridge

When topping off Theo’s food bowl, we love adding fresh foods to strengthen her microbiome and health. A scoop of yogurt is a staple of this that we add often. We throw in blueberries, strawberries (without the stems), sprouts, carrots, eggs, etc., for fruits and veggies. Small quantities of these foods are the best way to introduce them to your dog’s palate, and a little goes a long way. Feed a small variety of these foods with each meal, and your dog will reap the rewards and benefits.
