Questions?
What are anal glands?
Every dog has tiny sacs located on either side of their anus. They produce a fluid that smells awful and is typically expressed when defecating. However, many dogs struggle to express them, resulting in fluid buildup, discomfort, and possible infection.
How can I tell if my dog needs this service?
Signs your dog needs this service include scooting, licking, discomfort or difficulty defecating, discomfort when sitting, swelling around the anus, and a foul, fishy odor.
How often should my dog get this service?
All dogs are different, so there is no definitive answer, but typically every 1-3 months. Our vet technician can help you find the perfect cadence for your appointment schedule.
Why should a vet tech do this service?
At Le Pawsh, health and safety come first. That's why we don't offer gland expression through our grooming team — the traditional groomer method involves squeezing both sides of the anus externally, which can cause trauma, false expressions, and internal leakage. Instead, we've partnered with a registered veterinary technician who expresses glands the proper way: internally, and without the risk.
