Every dog has tiny sacs located on either side of their anus. They produce a fluid that smells awful and is typically expressed when defecating. However, many dogs struggle with expression, resulting in fluid build-up, discomfort, and possible infection.

Signs your dog needs this service include scooting, licking, discomfort or difficulty defecating, discomfort when sitting, swelling around the anus, and if you notice a foul fishy odor.

All dogs are different, so there is no definitive answer. Dogs needing this service should have it done every 1 - 3 months.

The grooming practice of gland expression involves squeezing both sides of the anus to express the fluid. This can cause trauma to the body, false expressions, and internal leakage.
